Case #001Difficulty: Easy

The Blackout

At exactly 8:00 PM, a building lost all electrical power. There was no backup generator or battery system for the elevators.

At 8:05 PM, a valuable necklace disappeared. Three people described where they were at that moment:

  1. A“I was reading by candlelight.”
  2. B“I was using my phone’s flashlight.”
  3. C“I was riding the elevator down.”

Whose statement doesn’t hold up?

Made your call? Reveal the solution

C. With no electrical power and no backup system, the elevator could not be running at 8:05 PM. Candlelight and a phone’s battery-powered flashlight still work. The contradiction makes C’s account impossible—it doesn’t, by itself, prove who took the necklace.
